This page lists the major local genealogy resources, online and offline. If you have any suggestions, please let us know.

Public Libraries

  • Los Angeles County Library offers Heritage Quest at their web site for L.A. County Library cardholders. Click on "Local History: for history of Antelope Valley and other communities. The Lancaster library holds a few yearbooks, telephone books back to the 1970s, and various local history publications. The Californiana Collection of the Rosemead Library has a large collection of local newspapers dating back to the 1850s. They have city directories, county histories, and California history resources.
  • Los Angeles City Library offers the Los Angeles Times online, fully index from 1881 to the present, available from any L.A. City Library location. The web site offers a historical photo collection and several genealogically useful databases. Most of the databases require an L.A. City Library card and some can only be accessed from a library location. The Central Library in downtown Los Angeles has a very large history and genealogy collection on lower level 4.
  • Palmdale City Library has the Los Angeles Times from 1985-present on the web site, available to Palmdale Library cardholders. The also have searchable obituary and clippings databases on their web site.

Other Genealogy Societies

  • Southern California Genealogical Society has a library with a broad collection of materials.
  • Sons of the Revoluton Library, 600 South Central Avenue, Glendale, CA 91204. You can reach them at (818) 240-1775. Materials relating to early America, as well as California, and local genealogy.
  • Immigrant Genealogical Society in Burbank has a significant collection of German and American genealogical materials.
  • Ventura County Genealogical Society offers numerous searchable indexes to Ventura County records, including vital records, cemetery records, obituaries, and court records

Family History Centers

  • Los Angeles Regional Family History Center is the largest Family History Center outside of Salt Lake City. They have a vast microfilm and microfiche collection, including nearly 700 films that are only at that location. They also offer a large map collection and free access to many genealogy web sites.
