Notes: | The following information is courtesy of Dennis Foley; The information in the newspaper clipping is inconsistent with our family history. James was in route to Tehachapi to meet with his brothers Francis (aka Frank) and George Foley. As the story was told to me he had traveled by wagon train to Los Angeles and then by horseback to his final resting place. He died at a ranchers home near Oak Creek Station. Word reached his brother Francis who retrieved his body and buried him at the present day gravesite. The commissioning of a fence is consistent with our information. The original fence rotted away but one of the original pickets was saved by my grandfather Barnett Foley. Barnett rebuilt the fence in the 1930's and the family and anonymous volunteers have since provided maintenance. |
